The Amateur Gardener decided to celebrate the first real spring day of the year by doing all those jobs that remained undone during the winter.

What a magnificent day it is too, about 18 degrees, sun shining, and not a cloud in the sky. It didn't take too long, though, before the Amateur Gardener's mind started to wander in other directions.

Nursery and seed retailers unknowingly selling a serious weed as a popular salad vegetable are being urged to remove it from their shelves.

The Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation is concerned that some nursery and seed retailers are selling the declared plant ‘Lincoln weed' under the name of wild rocket. Common rocket, which is a different species of plant and is not a weed, can be legally sold.

Giant Pumpkin competition seeds now available E-mail

The Mount Gambier Community Garden is again this year running its annual Giant Pumpkin competition.

Last year's winner, grown by Rory McEwen, was a whopping 83.05 kilograms, however weights of 227 kilograms are not unusual for the Atlantic Giant pumpkin cultivar.

The Community Action for Sustainability (CAS) will be celebrating National Tree Day by planting trees on Saturday 8 August 2009 on a private property near Mount Gambier.

The tree planting has been arranged at a private property on the corner of Mingbool and Kentish Roads as part of Planet Ark's National Tree Day to increase biodiversity and help the environment.
