The South Australian Farmers Federation (SAFF) has congratulated Minister Weatherill, Minister for Environment and Conservation on his decision to go ahead with the Bald Hills Drain near Kingston in the South East of South Australia. "He has shown leadership and an understanding of the importance of the drain to local landowners ensuring the sustainability of their agricultural production and futures," SAFF Chief Executive Officer Carol Vincent said today. The continuation of the project was in some doubt because of objections from a minority of wetland complex landowners, supported by vocal conservation groups, who worry that deep drains will ruin the wetlands. However, after deliberation Minister Weatherill has supported a reliable supply and safe disposal of water for productive crops and income from viable farmland leading to a healthy export - import balance sheet, and long-term food security. "Minister Weatherill has listened carefully to the farmers affected and the SAFF. He is a Labor Minister committed to rural South Australia and the agriculture sector," Ms Vincent said and the farmers involved and the SAFF thank him. |
