The Lakers Under 16 Girls, coached by Development Officer Trevor Semmens, won Division 1 of their age group at the annual Warrnambool Junior Basketball Tournament last weekend. There were six teams in the competition which was played in two sections. In the first game, the Under 16 Girl Lakers defeated Bellarine by 7 points in a somewhat scrappy contest. In their second game on Saturday the Lakers were "blown away" by host Association, Warrnambool, who sank an incredible 11 three pointers in the first quarter and led by 17 at half time. The Lakers regrouped in the second half but were beaten by 17. Lakers then bounced back to defeat Millicent in the Qualifying Final. On Sunday morning the Lakers managed to defeat Portland 21-18 in a dour defensive semi-final. Coach Semmens praised the defensive efforts of his players but challenged his players to take more chances at their scoring end. Bellarine pulled off an upset by defeating title favourite Warrnambool by one in the other semi-final. The Lakers then went on to claim the title against Bellarine by 11 points. This squad has now won three titles from three Junior Tournaments. The players now have their eyes on the Mount Gambier Junior Tournament being played over the weekend of 21 and 22 November 2009. The Lakers Under 16 Boys also travelled to Warrnambool last weekend. After recording one win in the minor rounds the Lakers bowed out of the contest for the title by losing to a tough and athletic Portland in the Qualifying Final. They finished fifth in the competition, defeating Colac in the Consolation Final. |
