Winners in Round 2 of the XXXX Gold Barber Shield were Penola and North, with the remaining two matches finishing next weekend.

Round 2 - Day 2 - 31 October 2009

Penola v Yahl - Penola High School

First week score: Penola all out 238.

Brothers Chris and Andrew Crouch opened the Yahl innings on day 2 of their encounter with Penola chasing the Penola score of 238.

The Penola team quickly took two early wickets - both Crouch brothers dismissed for 2 runs each. Yahl 2 for 7 in the 6th over.

Yahl number 3, Jacob Langdon (27), lost Jason Shanks for 3 with the score on 31, before finding a willing partner in Andy Paltridge to assist in advancing the score to 59 from 38 overs, before Langdon was C&B by George Kidman.

Paltridge and Tom Douglas got the score to 84 when Lachlan Jones set about destroying the Yahl innings, capturing 3 wickets in his 9th over and the 44th of the day. Paltridge first out - bowled for 34, Chayce Fox bowled for 0 two balls later and S Thompson LBW for 0.

Even worse for Yahl - Stockley dismissed Douglas for 9 with the score unbelievably still on 84. Yahl were now 8/84 in the 45th over.

A last wicket partnership of 34 between R Gordon (17) and Nick Reader (16 no) postponed the first Penola victory in the XXXX Gold Barber Shield competition for season 2009 / 2010.

Yahl finally dismissed for 120 in the 58th over.

Lachlan Jones was the pick of the bowlers for Penola capturing 4/24 from 15 overs, while Andrew Stockley provided good back up with 3/42 from 18 overs.

A convincing first innings win to Penola by 118 runs.

In their second innings Penola were 3/42 at stumps.

Northern Knights v North - Naracoorte

First week score: North Gambier 9 for 185.

Michael McGurk and Shaun Tate opened for the Knights and dominated the early stages of the match. A solid start to the Knights run chase had them looking at reeling the target in long before their allocated 80 overs. With the partnership on 55, Tate was dismissed for 33 after miscuing a cut shot off the bowling of North skipper Michael Silvy in the 21st over.

Silvy then grabbed three quick wickets to severely dent the Knights run chase.

McGurk LBW for 21, Brad Redding bowled (4) and Nathan Smith LBW for 7.

Ben Johnson chipped in to have Knights captain Adam Pitt caught by Tim Young for 2, and the Knights were now teetering at 5 for 69 in the 30th over.

Todd Price batted intelligently with the tail to get the Knights within striking distance of the 186 target, but he was left stranded on 56 when the Knights innings finally ended in the 64th over with the score coming up 25 short of the target. Northern Knights all out for 161.

Silvy was the star with the ball - taking 5/29 from 13 overs - to compliment his 74 not out with the bat.

Liam Downs-Woolley supported with 2/37 from 14.5 overs and Bryon Cleaver took 2/19 from 8 overs.

North won on first innings by 24 runs.

North then batted out the remaining 13 overs of the day finishing on 0/76, with Cleaver 51 not out.

The remaining two games in Round 2 of the XXXX Gold Barber Shield competition commenced on Sunday the 1st of November and will conclude on Saturday November 7th.

West Gambier v South Gambier - Malseed Park 1

South Captain Michael Sims won the toss and elected to bat.

South were in immediate trouble with Josh Thompson dismissed for 3 off the bowling of Bray Stephenson, the score 1 for 6 in the 4th over.

Matt Bowering and Kieran Ashby batted aggressively on a slow outfield.

Ashby was dismissed for 24 by Robbie Drenthen - South 2/60 in the 23rd over. Bowering was next out - C&B Sargeant for 40 - 3/75 in the 30th over.

Michael Sims and Harry Gill batted cautiously to take the score to 130 when Gill (19) was caught off the bowling of Trent Badman in the 56th over.

Sims (49) was dismissed 1 run short of his 50 off the bowling of South Australian Outbacks opening bowler, Bray Stephenson, and now South were 5/145.

The West bowlers fought back strongly from this point to bring the game back to an even footing by dismissing the last 5 South batsmen for just 12 runs. South all out for 157 in 65 overs.

Bray Stephenson was the main wicket taker for West with 5/36 from 18 overs.

Derek Sargeant took 3/12 from 7 overs of spin.

In Reply West are 2/27 - Paul Harding (10) and Captain Jason Hann (7) both out.

Kieran Ashby and David Somerfield have claimed 1 wicket each.

East Gambier v Mil Lel - McDonald Park 1

East Captain Simon Golebiowski won the toss and elected to bowl on a day that was to be dominated by the bowlers.

Mil Lel were amazingly all out for 126 in the only the 36th over of the day.

Number 8 batsman Callum Hudson top scored for Mil Lel with 39, Opener Todd Carpenter and skipper Craig Lock both scored 23.

Simon Golebiowski completely destroyed the Mil Lel batsmen to capture an incredible 8 wickets (17.1/5/39/8).

After no result in their Round 1 match due to inclement weather, East were desperate for first innings points to kick start their season. East Gambier needed a solid start to assure themselves of first innings points, and the game would certainly be taken from Mil Lel after posting such a moderate first innings total.

However the Mil Lel bowlers set about reversing their sides fortunes and proceeded to decimate the East Gambier side, dismissing them for a paltry 54 runs in unbelievably only the 19th over.

Dion Stratford was the top scorer for East Gambier with only 11 runs.

Nick Blachut (9.4/-/25/5) and Craig Lock (9/1/29/5) both taking 5 wickets to incredibly secure a comfortable first innings victory for Mil Lel by 66 runs.
