In Mount Gambier and District Cricket last weekend, Round 2 of the XXXX Gold Barber Shield was finalised last Saturday, and the matches from Round 1 of the XXXX Gold One-Day Cup were played on Sunday.


XXXX Gold Barber Shield

West Gambier vs South Gambier (Malseed 1)

Day 1 - 31/10/2009

South all out for 157 runs - West 2/27 - Paul Harding (10) and Captain Jason Hann (7) both out.

Day 2 - 7/11/2009

West lost early wickets to be 3/32 and 4/37. The best partnership was 29 for the fifth wicket. David Howell was top score with 33 - Number 9 batsman Robbie Drenthen remained 21 no - No other batsman reached double figures.

West all out for 115 from 38 overs of the days play.

All of the South bowlers were very economical and returned good figures. Richard Crute - 11/6/11/3; David Somerfield - 16.5/7/36/3; and Kieran Ashby - 14/6/30/2

South batting for a second time made 7/89. Kieran Ashby batting at number 7 made 33 no and Harry Gill made 31. Shane Dycer took 3 wickets and Bray Stephenson 2 wickets.

South win on the first innings by 42 runs.

East Gambier vs Mil Lel (McDonald Park 1)

Day 1 - 31/10/2009

Mil Lel were all out for 126. In reply - East Gambier all out for 54.

Day 2 - 7/11/2009

Mil Lel were 2 for 78 at the start of play - Justin Lamont was out for a duck and Marcus Von Duve was out for 27 - both from the bowling of Scott Allen.

Opener Todd Carpenter scored 24 and Simon Walters, who was a day 2 replacement for Nick Blachut, took their combined score to 23. Callum Hudson made 16 and Craig Lock 15

Mil Lel were dismissed for 127 - giving them a total lead of 199 runs.

East had 52 overs to chase an outright victory or limit Mil Lel to first innings points.

Simon Golebiowski had another very good day with the ball to capture 5 wickets - 16/7/29/5,  a total of 13 wickets for the match.

Scott Allen did most bowling taking 3/55 from 21 overs - with 4 maidens.

East managed to bat out the remaining overs - reaching 7/123. East slumped to 5/45 in the 23rd over - but Dan Stratford (49) batted with Captain Simon Golebiowski and Tom O'Connor (22 no) to deny Mil Lel the outright win.

Opener Dion Stratford scored 23, while Callum Hudson took 4 of the first 5 wickets to fall - 10/2/24/4

Mil Lel won on first innings by 72 runs.


XXXX Gold One-Day Cup

ROUND 1 8/11/2009

Mil Lel v West Gambier (Frew Park)

West won the toss and elected to bat.

Stephen Easterbrook and Darren Griffin opened the batting. Griffin was dismissed for 1 and the score was 1/5 in the 3rd over. Easterbrook was next out - for 30 - lbw bowled Jamie Bellinger - 2/44 in the 15th over.

David Howell made 11 - lbw to Marcus Von Duve and Jason Hann was runout for 14 - 4/68 in the 27th over. Robbie Drenthen and Jordon Murdoch were both quickly dismissed to have West a shaky 6/86 in the 31st over.

Trent Badman then batted well with the tail to push the score to 9/134 - when he was run out for 31.

West all out for 143 in the 46th over. Sundries was third top score with 22 extras.

For Mil Lel, Mitch Collins bowling leg breaks captured 3 for 31 from 9.5 overs.

In reply Mil Lel were dismissed for 128 - in the 46th over.

Callum Hudson and Marcus Von Duve opened for Mil Lel. Hudson was out for 2 - ct from the bowling of Shane Dycer - 1/9 in the 3rd over.

Von Duve was next out - also ct from Dycer's bowling for 15 - 2/20 in the 7th over. Craig lock was out for 3 - 3/39 in the 15th over

J Smith batted patiently for 21, until he was 4th out ct Murdoch bowled Drenthen - the score 45 in the 20th over.

Tyson Currie (3) and Jamie Bellinger (10) were dismissed by Drenthen and Tony Geddes respectively to leave Mil Lel 6/65 in the 27th over.

Sheldon Currie (27) and G Von Duve (21) fought hard to restore the Mil Lel chase - but when Von Duve was bowled by Kane O'Brien to leave Mil Lel 9/122 in the 44th over a win was becoming more unlikely for Mil Lel.

North Gambier vs Yahl - (MARIST PARK)

Yahl won the toss and elected to bat.

Openers Chris Crouch - (lbw Cleaver for 1) and Jacob Langdon (ct & bowled Mitch Lewis for 9), and number 3 Andrew Crouch (st Wallis b Cleaver for 6) were all out early in the Yahl innings - 3/21 after 12 overs.

Off Spinner Bryon Cleaver - opened the bowling and captured 2 wickets.

Jason Shanks and Andy Paltridge had a solid partnership which pushed the score to 81 - then 3 quick wickets fell - Shanks out for 21, Paltridge for 30 and Jake Dempsey for 1.

Michael Johnston dismissing Shanks and Mitch Lewis dismissed Paltridge and Dempsey.

Chayce Fox hit out to make 25 as the tail pushed the score to 135.

Yahl all out for 135 in the 49th over.

For North, the best bowlers were Mitch Lewis 3/13 from 8 overs, Michael Johnston 3/30 from 9 overs,  and Bryon Cleaver 2/23 from 10 overs.

In Reply North 3/136 in the 31st over.

North opened with Michael Johnston and Bryon Cleaver.

Both batsmen set out to attack the Yahl bowlers and smashed an opening stand of 109, before Cleaver and Johnston were both out - Cleaver for 46 - ct Chris Crouch b Langdon - Johnston for 58 - ct Chayce Fox bowled Andrew Crouch - after 24 overs North 2/109.

Marcus Wallis hit out (18 no) to finish off the game.

South vs East - (Blue Lake Sports Park 2)

East batted first and made 9/163 from their 50 overs.

Daniel Stratford top scored with 50, while brother Dion again contributed with 33. Youngster Tom O'Connor batted well to make 36.

David Somerfield was the best of the South bowlers with 2 for 18 from 10 overs, and Matt Bruorton also bowled well, taking 2 for 20 from 10 overs.

East losing 3 of their wickets to run outs was very costly in the context of the match.

Plenty of drama in the South reply, as South limped past the East score in the 46th over with only 1 wicket remaining.

South 9/164 from 45.1 overs.

Richard Crute was the saviour in a barren South batting card, scoring an unbeaten century to anchor the South win. No other South batsman was able to achieve a double figure score.

Crute came to the crease with the score on 2/7 and proceeded to hit 10 fours and 4 sixes to finish his innings 100 not out.

Best of the East bowling was Kerry Rammers with 3 for 24 from 7 overs, and Ryan Malin with 2 for 36 from 9 overs.
