Day 1 of Round 3 of the XXXX Gold Barber Shield was played in the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association matches last weekend.

Rain on Friday and the over cast conditions on Saturday would have given captains winning the toss thoughts of bowling on freshened up wickets.

A summary of the day's play is as follows:

  • South Gambier 91 v Penola 2/17
  • West Gambier 113 v Northern Knights 4/43
  • Mil Lel 142 v Yahl 3/23
  • East 8/127 v North Gambier

South Gambier vs Penola (Blue Lake Sports Park 2)

Penola won the toss and elected to bowl.

Shannon Wilson and Matt Bowering opened the batting to bowlers Lachlan Jones and Andrew Stockley. The bowlers were menacing and Stockley grabbed the first 4 wickets; dismissing Bowering for 2, Nick Goodrich for a duck, Wilson for 7 and Harry Gill for a duck. South 4/16 in the 24th over.

Captain Michael Sims and Richard Crute tried to build a partnership, but Crute was ct Kidman b D Flint for 11 and South were 5/34. Sims fell for 16 - ct Gray b Jones and South were in real trouble at 6/44.

David Somerfield batted with the tail to make top score of 29 - ct Gray b Jones. South were then 9/75. A last wicket partnership of 16 got South to 10/91 from 53 overs.

For Penola, Lachlan Jones took 4/22 from 16 overs with 6 maidens and Andrew Stockley took 4/23 from 19 overs with 7 maidens.

At the close of the day's play Penola were 2/17 in reply.


West Gambier vs Northern Knights (McDonald Park 2)

Northern Knights won the toss and elected to bowl.

Darren Griffin and Scott Stevens opened the batting - Stevens was out in the second over for a duck - ct Price b Michael McGurk - West 1/0. Stephen Easterbrook and Griffin put together a good second wicket partnership of 58 - then Easterbrook was run out for 36.

From 2/58 in the 22nd over - West collapsed to all out for 113 in 53.2 overs. When Griffin was out for 26 - b by Nathan Smith he had watched Hann, Harding and Howell and Sargeant all out - 2 wickets each to Smith and Sam Graetz - West then 7/76 in the 33rd over. Jordan Murdoch coming in at the fall of the seventh wicket made 28 no to get West to their final total.

The Northern Knights bowlers finished on top of West Gambier. For the Knights, Nathan Smith took 3/22 from 13 overs with 5 maidens, Sam Graetz took 2/22 from 14 overs with 6 maidens and Michael McGurk took 2/26 from 14 overs with 6 maidens.

Michael McGurk and Shaun Tate opened the batting for the Knights. McGurk was out for 8 ct Drenthen b Stephenson - Tate for 14 b Stephenson - Adam Pitt lbw b Stephenson for a duck and Nathan Smith b Stephenson for a duck.

Todd Price 17 no and Anthony Munro 3 no - dug in to prevent any further loss of wickets, leaving the Northern Knights 4/43 at stumps.

For West Gambier, Bray Stephenson had the figures with 4 wickets for 13 runs.


North Gambier vs East Gambier (Marist Park)

East finished the day at 8/127.

For North Gambier, Liam Downs-Woolley took 4/54.


Mil Lel vs Yahl (Frew Park)

Yahl won the toss and elected to bowl.

Tod Carpenter and Jamie Bellinger opened for Mil Lel to the bowling of Klint Malin and Andy Paltridge. Carpenter was first out ct Chris Crouch b Tom Douglas - for 10 - 1/24 in the 13th over.

Craig Lock and Bellinger took the score to 76 - where three wickets fell - Lock out for 16 ct Feast b Douglas, Bellinger b Ben Wilson for 43 and Nick Blachut ct C Crouch b Malin for a duck. Mil Lel now 4/76.

James Eastick made 14 - lbw to Wilson - 6/103, Justin Lamont 15 - ct Crouch b Jason Shanks - 8/114 and Nick Clayton 20 run out - to get Mil Lel to all out for 142 from 51.4 overs

For Yahl, Clint Malin took 2/12 from 10 overs with 5 maidens, Jason Shanks took 2/21 from 11.4 overs with 3 maidens, Tom Douglas took 2/28 from 8 overs and Ben Wilson took 2/41 from 11 overs with 1 maiden.

Yahl are 3/23 in reply - Ben Wilson (c &b Clayton), M Feast (ct Lamont b Clayton) and Jacob Langdon (b Blachut) have been dismissed.

Andrew Crouch is 8 no - Chris Crouch 0 no.

For Mil Lel, Nick Clayton was the pick taking 2/0 from 6 maiden overs, while Nick Blachut took 1/22 from 6 overs with 2 maidens.
