Intruders overcame injuries to two of its key players to go on and defeat Zodiacs Gold in Saturday's Preliminary Final. Both teams started strongly in the first quarter with Zodiacs Gold starting Jenna Smith in the goals with Yvette Holmes attributing to their strong start. Intruders kept slogging away with their goalies Nicole Rutkowski and Amanda Easson having no trouble finding the ring despite the big efforts of Zodiacs defenders Tanielle Brooskby and Natasha Millich, who have been strong contenders all season. Intruders pulled out some creative moves around the ring to reach their goalies. Centre Le-Anne Thomson and Wing Attack Megaw worked hard to get the ball into their goalies in the first quarter against the hard defence of Abbey Elkins and Samantha Gifford. Intruders lost Janine Megaw early in the game when she was the first to go down with a serious knee injury which will see her miss the much anticipated Grand Final this week. This was a big blow to the Intruders side but they managed to rally around with Leanne Bain taking the court in Megaw's place. Zodiacs Gold fell behind on the score board in the second quarter with Intruders outscoring them by 10 goals. The Gold team continued to apply pressure where they could but Intruders had an answer to every move. Association Runner up Best and Fairest Sonya Neale was a driving force in defence and made some lovely moves deflecting almost impossible to reach balls. Neale was able to drive the ball back into Intruders mid court on a number of occasions. Intruders were in front by 14 goals in the third quarter but the loss of Megaw forced the side to change their line up. Easson was moved into the defence while Bain combined with Rutkowski in goals. Zodiacs rested Harmer in the third quarter with Meghan Fitzpatrick taking her place. Fitzpatrick slotted in well for Zodiacs working around the ring with Elkins and feeding the ball into the ring to Smith and Holmes. Smith had some lovely stretches to enable her to have closer range shots. Neale took a huge leap in the third quarter to come down and injure her ankle and needed to be assisted off court. Reserve Kate Lamont took the court in her place with fellow defender Ashlie Michell. In the final quarter Intruders had a convincing lead 41-25 and continued their dominance of the game. With the beautiful shooting of the Intruders goalies they were able to add 17 goals to the final tally. Zodiacs Gold played hard right to the end but weren't good enough on the day to get up and take the win. Zodiacs Gold should be commended for making it to the Preliminary Final after a bumpy start to the season. Result: |
